Maybe one of these thoughts is familiar

An English contract arrived on Friday afternoon. It will take part of my weekend, and I’m still not sure I’ll catch everything that matters for my client.

The company was acquired by a group abroad. Meetings I used to have in my own language are now in English, and I say much less than I used to.

For years, a colleague handled the English. Now the client calls are mine. I’m the most senior person on the matter, but in English I can only show part of what I know.

Next week I have a negotiation in English, in front of my client. I’m afraid I won’t understand everything the other side says, and that my English will make me look less competent than I am.

I’ve been invited to speak at an international conference. I know my topic. I’m less sure about the English, and about talking to people afterwards.

A role I want asks for strong legal English. I’m not sure I’m ready for the interview.

It doesn’t mean something went wrong. It means your career has grown.

New clients, a new role, a new opportunity. You already know the law and your client. Your English just needs time to grow with you, and we work on that together.

What we can work on

You bring what you need to do now. We don’t follow a book or general topics. For example:

Contracts

A contract you need to read, review or negotiate.

Emails

Emails to clients or colleagues abroad.

Calls and meetings

Including the ones that switch to English with no warning.

Negotiations

Where you need to understand everything the other side says, and answer clearly.

Presentations and conferences

From your slides to the conversations after your talk.

Job applications

A role that asks for strong English, including the interview.

Every hour we spend together is connected to something real in your work. What you practise with me, you use that same week.

How I help you

Working 1:1 on your own material means I can:

Prepare every session from your documents

Before we meet, I read what you send me and prepare activities based on it. So the time you spend with me also helps with the contract or the email you're working on right now.

Practise the situation you'll face

We prepare the phrases, the structure and the questions you need for your call, meeting or negotiation, and we practise saying them, not just reading them. So when the real moment comes, you've already said these sentences before.

Show you your own mistakes

Mistakes in tone and word choice are very hard to notice alone. I give you clear feedback on your writing and speaking. So you know what to change, and you can trust your own writing and speaking.

Work on your register

Register means how formal you sound. We work on choosing the right words for each situation. So in a negotiation, your position sounds as strong as you mean it to be.

Prepare materials when you don't have them

If you're getting ready for an interview or a conference, I prepare the materials for you. So you can prepare for a situation before it arrives.

Work with confidential information

Before you share any real material, we sign an NDA, a contract that protects confidential information. So you can prepare with the real details of your work.

I don't write your emails or join your calls for you. I help you do them yourself. So next time, you're ready for it on your own.

Portrait of Claudia, founder of SpeechLex

Hello, I'm Claudia

When you bring me your contract, you don’t have to explain the law to me first. I trained and worked as a lawyer in Italy, including in the legal department of a bank. I understand the legal side of your work, so our time goes to your English.

I also come from a civil law system. So when an English term doesn’t match a concept in your law, I’ve asked myself the same questions you’re asking. I know where the differences are, and how to find them.

English has always been part of my life: my mother is Canadian. But good English wasn’t enough for legal work, so I built the language of the law, with the ILEC exam, a traineeship at a firm of solicitors in London, and a postgraduate diploma in legal translation. Since then, I’ve trained Italian Bar Associations, judges and legal professionals abroad, and I’ve taught a course on international contracts for RAI, Italy’s national broadcaster. So whether you’re preparing a negotiation or a talk, I’ve prepared people for that situation before.

Price

Sessions are €80 per hour, or less with a package.

How many hours you need depends on your goal and your level. After our free call, I send you a plan with the exact price. Full conditions: Terms and Conditions.

What you get back

Private sessions are an investment. Here is what they can give back, in your work:

All your experience, in English

You can give your full legal opinion in English, with the same detail as in your own language. Your experience counts in every language.

Ready for the moment that matters

The negotiation, the interview, the conference. You arrive prepared for the moment where the result matters most, for your client or for your career.

Opportunities you can say yes to

The role that asks for strong English, the conference invitation, the international group your company now belongs to. You can say yes to them, instead of hoping they go to someone else.

What you learn for one matter stays with you for the next one.

How to start

Four simple steps, and no commitment until you decide.

  1. Book your free assessment call

Choose a time in my calendar. The call is free and online.

  2. We talk about your situation

You tell me what you need English for, and where you are now. Together, we make sure I'm the right person to help.

  3. I send you a personal plan

Based on our call, I design a plan for your goal, with the number of sessions, the price and all the details.

  4. You decide

Take your time. If you'd like to continue, we choose a start date together.

Is this right for you?

These sessions are made for you if:

  • You're a legal professional, you're good at your job, and you want your English to match your experience.
  • Something real is coming: a contract, a client call, a negotiation, a talk or an interview, maybe very soon.
  • You want every session built around your work, with your own documents.
  • You want to be ready to do it yourself next time.
  • You're ready to invest in private, focused sessions.

You don't need to recognise yourself in every line. If most of them sound like you, let's talk.

Questions you may have

My documents are confidential. Can I still bring them?

Yes. Before you share any real material, we sign an NDA. Your documents and your clients stay protected.

I don't have documents to bring. Can we still work together?

Yes. If you're preparing for something that hasn't happened yet, like an interview or a conference, I prepare the materials for you.

Will we work on the language of my area of law?

Yes. In the free call, you tell me what you do and what you need English for. Then I prepare each session to be as close as possible to your real work, with your documents and your situations. So the vocabulary we practise is the vocabulary you use.

My English isn't very strong. Can I still start?

Yes. In the free call, we look at where you are now, and you'll know what to expect before you decide anything.

How many sessions will I need?

It depends on where you start, how much time you have, and what you need to be able to do. I won't give you a number that sounds good but isn't true. After the free call, I send you a realistic plan for your goal.

Are the sessions online?

Yes. Sessions are private and online, at times that work for both of us. You can join from your office or from home.

Do I have to decide during the call?

No. After the call, I send you a proposal, and you decide in your own time. There's no commitment until you choose to start.

Ready to do your legal English work yourself?

Tell me about the situation you’re preparing for, and we’ll look together at what you need.
